Professor Quibb

A tactical guide to the infinite realm of science. Although the world of science would take eternity to explore, Professor Quibb attempts to scrape the edge of this Universe. This blog helps you to understand particular topics under the more general categories: cosmology, mathematics, quantum physics, meteorology and others. Join me on my trek across the untraversed lands of the unknown.

Spacecraft Update

As of May 2012...

MESSENGER: MESSENGER entered orbit around Mercury on March 17, 2011 and began scientific observations shortly after. Tens of thousands of images have already come out, along with studies of Mercury's exosphere, magnetosphere, and surface analysis. Much more is on the way, as the mission has been extended for an additional year! For more info see the main post, MESSENGER.

New Horizons: Currently en route to Pluto, in between Uranus's and Neptune's orbits. Will pass Neptune's orbit in 2014. New Horizons is now less than 10 AU form Pluto and the distance further decreases each day. For more information about the New Horizons mission, see the main post, New Horizons.

Kepler: Launched March 7, 2009. First observations began in May 2009. At least sixty-one new planets have been discovered and four previously known ones verified with more coming. The mission has now been extended through 2016! For more information on the Kepler mission and the latest results, see the main post, Kepler.

Dawn: Launched in 2007, the probe entered the orbit of the asteroid Vesta in 2011, with scientific data arriving, including images and maps of Vesta's surface. It will orbit Vesta until July, and eventually reach the asteroid and dwarf planet Ceres in 2015. For more information, see the main post, Dawn.

Rosetta: Launched on March 2, 2004, Rosetta has followed a convoluted course through our Solar System, maneuvering past two planets and two asteroids before reaching its final destination, the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014. The probe is currently in deep space hibernation, a state that will continue for one more year, in preparation for its final encounter. For more information, see the main post, Rosetta.

Juno: Launched on August 5, 2011, Juno's mission is to eventually assume a polar orbit of Jupiter and study its magnetic field, as well as its internal structure. On the way, it will fly by Earth (2013), to set it on its course to arrive at Jupiter in 2016. For more information, see the main post, Juno.

Mars Science Laboratory: This mission began on November 26, 2011, when the spacecraft launched, and the probe is currently in cruise stage on its way to the red planet, where it will arrive in August 2012. The main cargo of the mission, the rover Curiosity, is by far the largest rover ever, and if successful, will analyze Mars with more than 5 times the scientific equipment of any of its predecessors. For more information, see the main post, Mars Science Laboratory.

Notes

Whenever you see (note (and then a number)) on a post refer to the information below.
1. The possibilities of the geometry of the Universe aren't what it looks like as a whole. It is the type of plane formed by the surface, or "edge" of the Universe.
2. Only atomic nuclei formed as a result of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. Atoms, including orbiting electrons, didn't form until ten of thousands of years later.
3. "Alpha particle" is another name for the Helium 4 atom nucleus.
4. The electron's charge is not created by quarks.
5. This fate of the Universe is almost the same as the Big Freeze
